COMPANY HISTORY |
||||||||||||||
In the Spring of 1994, the concept of forming a beach active wear company was first conceived by founder Bill Sigler at the Manhattan Beach Pier. As a volleyball player and a surfer, he mused that the majority of active beach sportswear did not reflect the desired styles and needs of himself and his many beach friends. Bill began to develop a plan, set some goals, and introduced SMACK Competition Sportswear in late 1994. The initial product line consisted of six T-shirts and four hats. The business was run in a garage on 13th Street in Manhattan Beach and was viewed as a hobby. "Only two local stores carried the initial line, but I was happy just following my passion", Bill states. In 1995, SMACK set its sites on building a new, cutting edge, stylish line of clothing that reflected the soul of Southern California. It was tough getting started... we carried eight different shorts, ten T-shirts, eight hats, six sweats and some women's active wear. Although our grass roots image was well know and received locally, the product line did not begin to catch on until 1996, when we introduced printed volleys, board shorts, casual wear, national advertising, athlete sponsorships, and a locally-based marketing program designed to support our retailers' sales and foot traffic. We made some exciting personnel changes, raised some money, and wouldn't you know it, we had to move into a "real" office (still less than half a mile from Manhattan Beach Pier). Our retailer base grew tenfold and our sales more than quadrupled in 1996. We sponsored top pro athletes like Jose Loiola, Dax Holdren, Tim Hovland, and more.
In 2000, Coastal Sol Enterprises took over the rights to the Smack Sportswear. CSE focused more attention on developing unique, stylish, trend setting indoor volleyball apparel. The results of these efforts positioned Smack as the up and coming leader of performance apparel for clubs, high school, and even some colleges (such as top ranked UC Irvine). Growth was phenomenal in 2003, as more kids took notice of our innovative designs, and more coaches were made aware of our attention to quality and service. Every year (from '02-06) the number of schools and clubs we outfit more than tripled. Also in 2004, the AVP (pro beach volleyball tour) took notice and chose Coastal Sol to design and produce all their merchandise. They sold more merchandise in 2004 than any previous year. This lasted till 2006, when Crocs came in with a huge sponsorship deal.
In 2005, the growth continued, as we not only partnered with the US National Team captain, Ryan Millar, and his Next Level Volleyball Camps, but also Mike Rangel (who trains Misty May, Kerri Walsh, and Karch Kiraly) and his company Plyo City, the largest plyo training franchise in the US. We also opened a new retail store in Manhattan Beach called the VB Superstore (the VB Superstore's online store also opened, allowing customers to place orders online). The store offers everything for indoor and beach volleyball. We also became the only team apparel company that truly is a one stop shop, offering apparel, numbering, lettering, embroidery, screen-printing, balls, shoes, and other volleyball gear and equipment.
In 2007 we launched our newly designed website, which now allows customers to design their custom uniforms online, as well as see 360 degree images of many uniform items, place team orders online, and view dozens of new items. We also gained 100% ownership in our own production facility, where we have dozens of sewing machines focused strictly on making orders for our customers … MADE IN THE US !! In 2008 we moved to a brand new facility in Carson, where we also have an indoor court where some of the tops club teams in So Cal practice. We also opened the Team Sports Superstore (www.TeamSportsSuperstore.com) which is located at the American Sports Center in Anaheim. The ASC is the largest indoor volleyball/basketball facility in the US, and is where the Men's (and probably Women's) National Teams train. On any given weekend day over 2000 young athletes pass by our store on their way into the gym.
And finally, 2009 has shaped up to hold tremendous potential … we not only opened stores in Pasadena and Ohio (with plans to open more soon), but we also entered into a 3 year licensing agreement with the AVP where we are producing all their high performance apparel, bikinis and beach shorts. Besides all the positive things we've been able to accomplish, we've been able to hire 20+ people in the last 18 months - we are doing our part to keep the economy going !!
THE FUTURE |
||||||||||||||
From the looks of things, the next few years will hold a great deal of expansion and excitement for our company. We plan to expand our products and services in both the indoor and sand team apparel markets, as well as vastly enhance our websites, expand our stores, and build both the Smack and AVP Authentics beach and casual lines. No matter what the future holds, we will always stay close to our roots, planted in the sandy beaches of Southern California. Thanks for your consideration and support.
